I was wondering if you had any guide/instructions on how i would go about modifying one of your xxx.theme packages to include my own icon set . I recently found the amazing faenza icon set which could replace almost all the WinXP icons. At current moment, we have no guides to replacing resources within the theme packages.

That being said, it isn't hard to modify the theme packages to your liking. You will need to use 7zip to unpack the theme package to a folder. Then you can use Reshacker to modify the RES files to your heart's content. Repack the entire folder structure with 7zip, making sure you use the .theme extension instead of .7z.

If you change the theme package name, you need to do a few more things prior to packing the resources. For example, if you change the theme package name to Faenza, you need to change the Version.ini so that it reads:

Then repack the resources into a theme package named Faenza.theme.

Keep in mind that XP Home Edition resources are in the Home folder and Media Center Edition resources are in the MCE folder. XP Professional x64 resources exist in the x64 folder, but x64 support (like Win2k and Win2k3) is experimental at this point and support may change in the future.

If you want to publish it for other users, please upload it somewhere and post a link to the new theme. At that point, I will be able to correct the MD5 hashes and upload everything as necessary for the theme. We can also create a FTP login for you if that is desired..... Please contact me via PM to arrange that.

EDIT: If you fail to edit the internal theme name, older versions of the GUI will inform the user that your theme package isn't a theme package at all. Newer versions will raise the name issue, but will allow the user to continue after okaying the issue.

By the way, I will be developing a new stand-alone program to fix the MD5's in the theme packages. It will also be able to upload the package to the specified FTP account.

CLARIFICATION: There are MD5s of each resource file in the theme package in the Version.ini file. This program will update each of the MD5s so that the update functionality will work properly.

As far as I have observed, version.ini contains the following thing:

filename=MD5 Hash|Size in Bytes|Last Code

Here, understanding the last code was a bit tougher than the rest:

Example: 20090126190153

1st 4 digits tell the year when the res file was made. Next 2 will tell the month and next 2 will tell the date. The remaining digits tell the time when it was made according to 24-hour time format.

If you wanna make a package, set your pc timezone to GMT -05:00. You won't face any problems regarding date-time. I checked it from Version.ini in blue.xptsp

By the way, I wanted everyone to see a simple bmp I made using photoshop. It looks good as a blue logon screen.

Actually, it doesn't matter what time zone that the PC creating the Version.ini contents is set to. It is really only relevant to the theme creator, as it indicates when the resource file was updated. The GUI doesn't check the time stamp when performing the updates (primarily because of the time zone issue, which I haven't been able to resolve), but relies entirely on the recorded MD5 hash to determine whether or not a updated resource is available.
